translation (not mine) of the caption for this map on France2 news:
« At the end of the report, CNN screens a map showing the main cities hit by the riots. Trouble is, that Toulouse is in the Alps, Strasbourg in the middle of Germany, Cannes in Montpellier and even Paris isn't at the proper place. »
(picture and caption borrowed from the lovely sa4turn3)
Yeah. I know it's not that big of a deal, and rarely do I ever post about shit like this, but our lovely CNN and various other "news" networks have really made asses of themselves. As if all the misleading Katrina-coverage wasn't bad enough, the misguided and just.plain.WRONG reporting of the riots in France is almost too much to stomach. Not only are they unable to geographically locate places on a map and figure out which cities are in France and which are not, they're also simplfying the problem so that the "average-American" (who would probably be much more intelligent without their "help") can digest decades of difficulties over their morning coffee. I can't tell you how many times I've seen headlines like "black muslims riot in France." I'm not there right now and I'm certainly not French, but from my limited knowledge of la francophonie I can tell you that the situation as it stands is much MUCH larger than race and/or religion.
thanks, tv.
we owe you one.

Although, looks like ya may end up in the ocean, if this map is correct. And I hear that Poseidon ain't friendly to little girls who like speaking french and smoking cigs.
Could just be a rumor though, You never know.

bad geography + pulling stories out of nowhere = rip roarin' good time
but i do like how the riots stem out of a problem france has had for a long long time and nobody gives a shit until there's a riot!but you know americans... if it isnt here and doesnt involve two celebrities makin' babies, it isnt really news anyway.

I must say that I didn't expect those screenshots to spread that fast, I spot it all the time when browsing the place, including on russian lj's... heh... A little revenge from when they called us "stinking frogs" back in 2003.
To bounce back on what you say here, I heard those headlines as well and I was just laughing. This has nothing to do with religion. The media are just fantasming...
As for "black muslim riots", it would seem that american medias are trying to apply european problems to their american way of reasonning. We don't reason with races here. They don't appear in how people are classified or counted (not officially, of course, discrimination unfortunately stays everywhere. But not in the stats.) so it's very inaccurate. But I expect that aside from now knowing geography, they don't know about this.
Maybe that when they tried to come and learn, they ended up in middle Africa. Must be that ;)

you don't know me but I read your comment about English books on LJ and got curious (I tend to be...). I just went to read your profile and saw your bio: not my favorite picture but I LOVE REISER!!!!!
I know it's off topic there but I was so surprised I had to let it out!
voilà voilà voilà. :)
I'd comment on the map but everything has been said and everything is back to "normal" in France now. French media have found something else to talk about...
